IGCP 727 Geological heritage – sustainable management of geological hazards and water resources in transboundary region of Kyrgyzstan (2020-2021)

(Full project name: Geological heritage for capacity building – the basis for sustainable management of geological hazards and water resources in transboundary region of Kyrgyzstan)

Brief description of the project

Welcome to the IGCP 727 project!

The goal of the project is to establish international cooperation in the study of natural resources and natural hazards to create a transboundary geopark in the southwestern Tien-Shan – an area with an outstanding geological heritage. Cooperation will contribute to scientific knowledge and the consolidation of peace.

The southwestern part of the Tien-Shan covers the territories of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The region has a high potential for the implementation of scientific and applied IGCP projects: Geographic heritage for sustainable development; Global Change; Geohazards; Hydrogeology; Earth Resources and Geodynamic.

We plan to explore the potential of the geological heritage and preserve it for generations. This will contribute to sustainable development and the involvement of local indigenous people in the development of the Geopark. Also, this region has preserved the pristine nature and culture of indigenous peoples.

Our project is open to young scientists and women who want to study geological hazards and water resources in the most geodynamic region in the center of the Eurasian continent.

Research results will help mitigate the effects of climate change and reduce interethnic tensions.

We hope for the support of donor organizations and partners who will help involve local communities in the process of creating and operating a Geopark.

The Geopark will allow the indigenous population to re-evaluate their interaction with nature. The future Geopark will solve a number of social problems of the indigenous population: poverty reduction, adaptation to climate change, as well as improve the lives of women and youth. Rational use of natural resources and harmony with nature will improve the life of the indigenous population.

Our long-term goals are to use the potential of the geological heritage for the sustainable development of the most remote region of Kyrgyzstan, to create a UNESCO Global Geopark that will expand knowledge about the geological heritage and allow the management of natural hazards and water resources, as well as improve social processes.

For this, we intend to study natural hazards and find ways of rational use of water resources with an emphasis on international cooperation.

Joint research, as well as meetings, will demonstrate the potential of this region for the implementation of scientific and social projects.

We invite everyone interested in the implementation of the project goal
